The UK government is set to address escalating motor insurance costs, according to The Mail on Sunday. Transport Secretary Haigh, who promised a major transport overhaul in July, will soon announce new measures aimed at reducing insurance premiums.
Haigh criticized the previous administration for allowing costs to rise due to unfair practices, inflation, poor road conditions, and increased car theft. She is focused on making insurance more affordable, especially for new drivers and the elderly.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reported that the average comprehensive car insurance premium was £635 in the first quarter of 2024, a 1% increase from the previous quarter. ABI’s Mervyn Skeet acknowledged the financial strain on households but assured that efforts to address cost issues will continue.
Haigh emphasized that car insurance is a legal necessity, not a luxury, and outlined five key priorities for her department, including improving rail and bus services and promoting greener transport.
