Freddie Hamilton-Russell, an expert from rural insurance broker Lycetts, has issued a warning to West Midlands farmers regarding the risks associated with hiring temporary workers during the busy harvesting season.
He emphasized the crucial need for farmers to implement proper health and safety measures and secure adequate insurance coverage from July to October, the peak period for root crops and cereals. Additional staff are often hired to manage the increased workload, making safety protocols for both permanent and temporary workers essential.
With agriculture reporting high fatality rates compared to other industries, Hamilton-Russell highlighted the importance of Employers’ Liability insurance, cautioning that standard farm policies may not cover all potential incidents involving various types of employees.
He advised farmers to conduct thorough health and safety assessments, provide comprehensive training, and consider management liability cover to handle potential costs from Health and Safety Executive (HSE) interventions. This proactive approach, he stressed, is vital to protect employees and safeguard the farm’s reputation.
Hamilton-Russell urged farmers to consult their insurance providers to ensure they have the necessary coverage to mitigate risks and manage liabilities effectively.
