Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced the extension of its free insurance program for foreign tourists until December 31, 2024, according to a report by Azernews citing foreign media sources. Initially intended to conclude on August 31, the extension aims to bolster confidence among international travelers regarding their safety while visiting the country.
Under the revised terms, the insurance policy provides significant coverage in case of unfortunate incidents. In the event of death, the family of the tourist is entitled to compensation amounting to 1 million baht. Loss of organs or permanent disability results in compensation of 300,000 baht, while medical expenses arising from accidents are reimbursed up to a maximum of 500,000 baht based on actual costs incurred.
Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanit emphasized that the insurance initiative serves as a safeguard for foreign visitors, offering protection in scenarios such as criminal incidents and natural disasters within Thailand. Notably, the insurance benefits are not applicable if tourists already possess their own insurance policy or if the tour operator has independently insured its customers.
Launched earlier this year, the program targets individual travelers who do not have their own health insurance coverage for various reasons. To qualify for financial compensation, foreign tourists must present a passport indicating their tourist status upon entry into Thailand. Applications for insurance claims must be submitted within 15 days of the incident.
The extension of this insurance scheme underscores Thailand’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of its international visitors throughout 2024, without imposing additional costs on travelers.
