Wotton + Kearney, a prominent Australasian insurance and risk law firm, has officially launched its Asia hub in Singapore this week. This strategic move marks the firm’s establishment as a significant legal force in insurance and risk management across the Asia Pacific region. Notably, Wotton + Kearney is the first Australian-domiciled insurance and risk law firm to make such a foray into Asia.
The firm’s new Asia practice will be spearheaded by managing partner Ben Nicholson, who transitions from Kennedys in Singapore, accompanied by partner Tom Morrison and a team of five professionals.
Mr. Nicholson brings a wealth of expertise, advising on specialty risks with a strong emphasis on property, energy, engineering, and infrastructure. He has a broad range of experience spanning the Asia Pacific region, the UK, the Middle East, and North Africa. Known for leveraging his sector knowledge and understanding of commercial realities, Mr. Nicholson is adept at steering complex and high-stakes disputes towards practical resolutions.
Tom Morrison, also focused on property, energy, and construction matters, provides policy coverage advice on Industrial All Risk, Construction All Risk (CAR), advance loss of profit, delay in start-up, and business interruption disputes. His proficiency extends to complex engineering losses across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, with significant experience in international arbitrations under HKIAC, ICC, LCIA, and SIAC rules.
Wotton + Kearney’s Asia team, boasting extensive experience in the region, possesses a deep understanding of local law, insurance sector practices, and the market’s diverse approaches.
Mr. Nicholson highlighted that while the team is headquartered in Singapore, their services will span across Asia and the Middle East, establishing a truly regional hub. He expressed enthusiasm about joining Wotton + Kearney at a time of strategic international expansion, especially as some traditional competitors face market challenges.
“Wotton + Kearney has always pursued strategic growth opportunities. This significant move underscores the firm’s commitment to Asia and beyond,” said Nicholson.
Since its inception in 2002, Wotton + Kearney has grown from a two-partner firm to one with 82 partners and over 450 lawyers. The firm operates out of 10 offices located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and now Singapore.
