In response to recent weather disruptions, including El Niño and a severe cold front, insurance providers in the agricultural sector are conducting nationwide assessments of farms. This comes as they anticipate substantial claims resulting from these extreme conditions.
The latest wave of harsh weather, marked by intense flooding, cold snaps, high winds, and fires, has wreaked havoc on agricultural production. The adverse effects have led to considerable damage to crops, livestock, and farm infrastructure.
Motsepe Matlala, President of the National African Farmers Union, highlights the critical importance of South Africa’s agricultural sector for national food security. Matlala underscores the essential role that insurance must play in protecting the country’s food production.
Despite the need for robust insurance support, Matlala points out that costs have surged due to recent weather extremes and issues like foot-and-mouth disease. He emphasizes that farmers have urged the government to address these rising expenses by offering financial assistance.
Matlala cautions that without prompt action from both the government and private sector, the survival of farmers, their crops, and their livelihoods could be at severe risk.
“It is unfortunate that this issue remains unresolved,” Matlala lamented.
