The Delta State Government has successfully enrolled more than two million individuals in its contributory health insurance scheme, announced Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission. Speaking during a visit by members of the Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Dr. Akpoveta highlighted the scheme’s significant impact in augmenting medical expenses for registered participants across the state.
Since its inception in January 2017, the scheme has achieved a milestone by enrolling over 35% of Delta residents. Dr. Akpoveta underscored that the scheme covers over 300 Cesarean Sections (CS) monthly, each costing more than N500,000, yet remains relatively unnoticed by the public.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing free medical care to children aged 0-5 years and expressed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s dedication to safeguarding vulnerable groups.
Mr. Ifeanyi Olannye, Chairman of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel, commended the state government for prioritizing affordable healthcare amid current economic challenges. He praised the scheme’s expansion to include students from state-owned tertiary institutions, aligning with Governor Oborevwori’s administration’s “M.O.R.E Agenda” aimed at enhancing health and well-being statewide.
