Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome is proud to announce that residents and business owners in East Baton Rouge Parish will soon benefit from a 20 percent reduction in their flood insurance premiums. This significant discount follows the parish’s elevation to a Class 6 rating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS), a designation awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in recognition of the parish’s rigorous floodplain management efforts and proactive risk reduction measures.
Effective October 1, 2024, this improved rating translates to a 20 percent discount on NFIP flood insurance premiums for policies issued or renewed within East Baton Rouge Parish, up from the previous 15 percent discount. This change is a direct result of the flood mitigation strategies championed by Mayor Broome, aimed at safeguarding the community and minimizing property damage from flooding.
“We are dedicated to enhancing our community’s resilience against disasters. This upgraded rating brings an additional 5 percent discount for property owners in East Baton Rouge, amounting to annual savings of approximately $700,000,” stated Mayor Broome. “This accomplishment underscores our commitment to mitigating flood risks in Baton Rouge while alleviating the financial burden of flood insurance on our residents and homeowners.”
Under Mayor Broome’s leadership, the parish continues to undertake extensive drainage projects. Over the past year, substantial progress has been made, with 35,000 tons of debris removed from critical waterways including the Comite River, Claycut Bayou, Ward Creek, Jones Creek, Bayou Fountain, Elbow Creek, and Dawson Creek.
This concerted effort in floodplain management and drainage improvements highlights East Baton Rouge Parish’s dedication to reducing flood risks and protecting its community from the financial and physical impacts of flooding.
